I wanted to offer a few gentle questions for family visits and phone calls during the holiday season.
Holiday time together can offer a comfortable opening to learn about a loved one’s wishes, important information, and family stories.
Choose a quiet moment. Ask whether they feel like talking. One question is enough to begin.
“Would you be comfortable talking sometime about what matters most to you as you look ahead?”
“If you ever wanted more help at home, what would you want us to understand about your routines and preferences?”
Sharing important information
“Would you like someone you trust to know where you keep your important papers and whom to contact with questions?”
“What would make it easier for you to talk with us about these things?”
Passing along family stories
“Which family story would you most like the grandchildren to hear?”
“Is there a recipe, tradition, or keepsake with a story you would like us to write down?”
Let your loved one set the pace. Listen, respect their privacy, and leave room to return to the conversation another day.
For legal questions about planning documents, speak with a local estate planning attorney. When documents are prepared and ready for notarization, I am happy to help.
A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones,
