Your Estate Planning Documents Are Ready to Sign: What Happens Next?
You have met with your estate planning attorney, talked through your wishes, and received word that your documents are ready to sign. Now you may be wondering how to arrange the appointment, especially if traveling to your attorney’s office is difficult.
The signing can come to you.
I meet clients at home, in medical facilities, offices, and at other suitable locations throughout Ravalli County. Some people need a visit because they are homebound or receiving care. Others simply find it easier to sign in a familiar place. Either way, we can plan an appointment around your circumstances.
A few details to settle before signing day
Your attorney’s office can tell you which documents are ready, who needs to sign, and whether witnesses are required.
Let me know where you would like to meet and whether there are any practical considerations, such as facility visiting procedures or a time of day that works best for the signer. A table or other comfortable place to review and sign the documents is helpful when available.
I will also let you know the list of acceptable identifications, and the requirements for the signer to be “alert, aware and not under duress” . If you have a question about what a document says or whether it reflects your wishes, please ask your attorney before the appointment. You deserve time to get those answers.
What happens during the visit?
I will meet the signer(s), check their identification, ensure they know what they are signing and want to sign it. Then I carry out the notarizations required for the documents. If there are witnesses, they will be added to the journal entry.
A home or bedside appointment can have its own rhythm. We can take care to make the setting as comfortable and calm as circumstances allow. My role is to handle the notarial part of the appointment with care while the attorney remains the person to answer legal questions about the documents.
After the documents are signed
The attorney’s office can explain where the signed documents should go and whether there are any remaining steps. If we have arranged the appointment together, we can confirm the handoff before signing day so everyone knows what to expect.
Estate planning can involve many decisions, but getting the documents signed does not have to mean arranging a trip across town. Whether you are helping a loved one in a care facility or would simply prefer an appointment at home, Ravalli Mobile Notary can bring the signing to you in Hamilton, Stevensville, Pinesdale, Corvallis, Victor, Florence, and south Lolo.
